Esten Rye, DevOps Manager at Platform9, shares how his team manages costs in the face of fluctuating workloads. Esten addresses the challenges of using Reserved Instances (RI), which are more suited for stable, long-term workloads, to meet the demands of a rapidly changing infrastructure. Learn how Platform9 uses Archera to optimize their reservations for “big iron” deployments, balancing flexibility and cost by making swift, strategic decisions.
“We’ve got a lot of stable workloads, but there are sizing events in our OpenStack product that result in us changing the reservation size, that we wanted to be able to take advantage of and be able to get reservations quickly.
The challenge in general with Reserved Instances is they’re not designed for people who want to be aggressive. They’re designed for people who have stable workloads and have longer risk timelines. I need to be able to make decisions in days, not years. We have a lot of bets that are going on right now that involve really big iron, and we want to try and minimize the cost of that. When we have to reserve it, we don’t want to reserve it forever because it’s really expensive.”
